Welcome to the Automotive Center Resource Library. The library is dedicated to providing information about plastics materials, processes and design criteria to automotive engineers and designers.

Located in the Automotive Center, Troy, Michigan, the Resource Library houses a comprehensive collection of books, periodicals, CD Roms, conference papers, market research reports and access to on-line databases to help answer your questions quickly and accurately. We can also tap the resources of our 13 member companies--the country's leading producers of plastics resin.

Plastic Properties

The Resource Library's collection includes technical information about the physical, mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of various plastics--information you need to select an appropriate plastic for your application.

Much of the library's information about plastic properties is included in The Plastics Digest. This exhaustive guide to plastics is organized into 16 basic parts to help you evaluate plastics based on properties, flammability, chemical and environmental resistance, ASTM tests, commercial or generic name, manufacturer/supplier and more. The Annual Book of ASTM Standards and the Concise Encyclopedia of Polymer Science and Engineering are also available at the Resource Library.

Plastic Processing

The library's technical reference books can help you find answers to questions about designing for assembly, coloring and joining techniques, and protecting against wear. Conference papers cover many design and manufacturing trends. The collection also includes resources about injection molding, the most prevalent manufacturing process used for thermoplastic car parts.

Recycling and Reuse

The Resource Library has many technical reports and conference papers related to the recovery and recycling of automotive plastics.

Magazines and Periodicals

The Resource Library collection includes a number of magazines and periodicals including Plastics News, Automotive News, Ward's Auto World, SPE's Plastics Engineering, SAE's Automotive Engineering International, and Recycling Today.

Argonne National Laboratory Transportation Technology R&D Center
Argonne National Laboratory is developing technologies for separating plastics from automotive shredder residue (ASR). Their patented froth-flotation separation process has produced recycled ABS with purity greater than 99.5%.

Ball State University Plastics Research and Education Center
The Plastics Research and Education Center performs plastics processing and materials testing for industry. Extensive laboratory facilities and equipment are available to meet the varied and changing needs of the plastics industry. Undergraduate coursework in plastics processing, materials and design is available.

University of Delaware, Center for Composite Materials
Founded in 1974, CCM is an internationally recognized interdisciplinary center of excellence for composites education and research.

University of Akron, College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
The College of Polymer Science & Polymer Engineering is comprised of the Akron Polymer Training Center, EPIC Applied Research Laboratory, EPIC-Hanna Blending and Compounding Center, the Molding Technology Center. Take this link for more links to information about polymers on the web.

University of Massachusetts-Lowell, Department of Plastics Engineering
The Department of Plastics Engineering at U-Mass includes the Institute for Plastics Innovation, the Plastics Recycling Technology Development Center, and the NSF Center for Biodegradable Polymer Research.

Illinois Institute of Technology, Center of Excellence in Polymer Science and Engineering
The Center of Excellence in Polymer Science and Engineering of the Chemical and Environmental Engineering Department is composed of a research program and undergraduate and graduate specialization education programs.

Penn State University, Composites Manufacturing Technology Center
The Composites Manufacturing Technology Center serves as the focal point of inter-departmental research and education in advanced structural composites. Its mission is to facilitate and promote research, educate and train scientists and engineers, provide a forum for the exchange of information and improve existing technology.

University of Wisconsin - Madison, Polymer Processing Research Group
The Polymer Processing Research Group
examines the manufacturing processes for polymeric products via computational and experimental methods. Some of the processes studied are compression molding, extrusion, injection molding, and blow molding.

Office for the Study for Automotive Transportation
OSAT's objectives are to provide research and analysis, information resources and communication forums that respond to the continually changing needs of the international automotive and motor vehicle transportation industries.

U.S. Council for Automotive Research (USCAR)
USCAR is the umbrella organization of DaimlerChrysler, Ford, and General Motors, which was formed in 1992 to further strengthen the technology base of the domestic auto industry through cooperative, pre-competitive research.

Michigan Materials and Processing Institute (MMPI)
The Michigan Materials and Processing Institute (MMPI) is an organization of industries and universities focused on polymer composite materials for cost-effective, engineering applications as well as on the polymer industry in Michigan.

Polymer Processing Institute
The mission of the Polymer Processing Institute is to assist industry in the field of polymer technology and related areas through sponsored research, development and education. The institute maintains strong links with the Institute of Polymer Technology and Mechanical Engineering of Loughborough University (U.K.).

Polymer Institute, University of Detroit Mercy
The Polymer Institute is an integral unit of U of D's College of Engineering and Science. It is recognized internationally as the top academic institution in the field of polyurethanes.

Virtual Polymer Resource Center, Ferris State University
The Virtual Polymer Resource Center is in its development stages. The virtual and physical library collection will meet the needs of students in FSU plastics and rubber engineering programs.

Ferris State University, Plastics Engineering Technology Program
Both an Associate's and a Bachelor's degree are available in Plastics Technology at Ferris State University. Ferris State offers Michigan's only B.S in Plastics Engineering Technology.

Central Michigan University, Vehicle Design
Thus undergraduate degree program prepares students for employment in the vehicle design area of the automotive industry.

Lawrence Technological University, Masters Degree of Automotive Engineering
This master's program is designed for working professionals. It is designed to help students use and improve their automotive engineering skills, encompassing strategic planning, design, product engineering, and manufacturing.

The University of Michigan-Dearborn, Master of Science in Engineering in Automotive Systems Engineering
This master's program provides an interdisciplinary approach with depth in automotive engineering, and breadth across electrical, industrial, mechanical, and manufacturing engineering disciplines.

The University of Michigan-Dearborn, Engineering Professional Development, Plastics and Composite Materials
Students in this certificate program are exposed to both the design and manufacture of composite materials. Particular emphasis is on materials for automotive.

The University of Michigan-Dearborn, Center for Lightweight Automotive Materials and Processing
This graduate program adds a lightweight automotive materials concentration to the existing master's program on Automotive Systems Engineering at U of M-Dearborn.

Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
The Society of Automotive Engineers website provides access to automotive plastics information (papers, books, and standards) via a searchable interface.

Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE)
SPE facilitates communication among scientists and engineers engaged in the development, conversion and applications of plastics. It has a searchable Web site and bookstore.

Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME)
SME is a professional society serving the manufacturing industries. Its website offers educational, tradeshow, and supplier information. An on-line bookstore is also available.

VDI Society for Plastics Technologies
The VDI Society for Plastics Technologies (VDI-Gesellschaft Kunststofftechnik) is a division of the Association of German Engineers (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure) and is responsible for the area of plastics and plastic technology. This society sponsors the annual conference Plastics in Automotive Engineering Conference, Europe's most successful conference on automotive plastics.

Advanced Materials and Processes Information Analysis Center
The Advanced Materials and Processes Technology Information Analysis Center, overseen by the office of the Secretary of Defense, (AMPTIAC), provides access to vast amounts of archived materials property data. A searchable interface facilitates access to this research collection. Searches requiring less than 8 hours are often free of charge.

Recycler's World
This is a worldwide trading site for information related to secondary or recyclable commodities, by-products and used and surplus items or materials. Automotive plastics are included.
